Academic Experience

Academic Administration

As the Head of the Department of Information Technology
I had been the Head of the Department of Information Technology at Jadavpur University from 2001 to September, 2011 and again from October 2013 to October 2015. The B.E programme in the department started in the year 2000. The annual intake is 65 and I was the only teacher to join the department in 2001. The department has grown since then. In the following, I have highlighted my contributions in the growth of the department.

Creation of laboratory facilities
Currently, the department has five computing facilities with around 120 desktop computers and 7 entry to mid-range servers. All these computers and servers are connected in LAN which is connected with internet. I had to personally developed these facilities by going through all activities starting from budget allocation, requisition to procurement, installation. We have also purchased some software for taking laboratory classes although we use the open source software as much as possible. There are also one electronics laboratory and one electrical technology laboratory facilities.

Creation of infrastructure
When I joined the department, it was accommodated in a 4-storey building which was earlier not used. I had to propose the plan to create spaces for class rooms, laboratory facilities, the office, teachers’ sitting room, seminar rooms. All our class rooms and seminar room are fitted with LCD projectors and screen. I also had to do all activities to procure the necessary furniture (including chairs for class rooms and laboratories, tables, almirahs, cabinets, projectors, screen etc.).

Recruitment of teachers
When I joined there was only one sanctioned post in the department. I helped the University to write letters to the State Government to allocate more teachers. Currently there is a sanction of seven regular teaching posts by the Government. In addition, I proposed the University to take a few teachers on contractual basis. Currently, there are five teachers in the department on contractual basis.

Creation of additional space
As the department grew very rapidly in the last ten years, I requested the University to provide some additional space. Recently, the University allocated an additional space of 7000 square feet.

Starting of M.E (Software Engineering) course
We started an M.E (Software Engineering) course in the year 2002. The intake is 25 students per year from all engineering disciplines.

Modernization of the undergraduate syllabus
We have modernized the undergraduate syllabus for Information Technology twice in the last ten years. We have also upgraded the syllabus of M.E (Software Engineering) course once to keep it up-to-date.

Collaboration with Industry
I had to personally contacted different organizations in India to introduce our department to them. This was very important for placement of the pass-out students of the department in the early years. I was also instrumental in an MoU between Jadavpur University and M/S TCS Ltd. According to the MoU, M/S TCS sponsors 20 students every year in our M.E (Software Engineering) course. M/S TCS also gives a Best Student Project Award to 2 students in our department.

As the Joint Coordinator of the Centre of Mobile Computing and Communication
Our University was selected as a University with Potential for Excellence. Accordingly, a centre of Mobile Computing and Communication was established in 2004 in which I was appointed as the Joint Coordinator. I was instrumental in the following activities.

Boosting of Research Activities through Involvement of many faculty members from various departments of the University in research and development activities in mobile computing and communication.
Around Rs. 2-Crore was allocated to several projects in various departments of the University. I was instrumental in selection of projects and review of selected projects every year.

Introduction of M.Tech Course
A 2-year full-time Post-graduate (M. Tech.) program in Distributed & Mobile Computing approved by AICTE was started by the School of Mobile Computing & Communication from the academic session 2006-2007. The intake of of the course is 15 students who come from various disciplines. I was responsible for the proposal of the course, and in the preparation of the syllabus of the course.

Sensor Networks Laboratory
A small sensor network laboratory has been set up using crossbow technologies. The set up contains 8 nos. of MICA2 motes operating at 2.28 GHz and 6 nos. of IRIS motes operating at 2.4 GHz.
